11/10/2023 0 Comments Jewish remembrance candleThe day’s official name, Yom HaShoah Ve-Hagevurah, was codified in the Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Law of Yad Vashem (August 19, 1953), which determined that one of the tasks of the Yad Vashem Authority is to inculcate in Israel and its people awareness of the commemoration. The 27 th day of Nisan was proclaimed as “Holocaust and Ghetto Uprising Remembrance Day – a day of perpetual remembrance for the House of Israel.” This date was chosen because it falls between that of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, which began on the first day of Passover, and Yom Hazikaron – the memorial day for Israel’s fallen soldiers (on Iyyar 4) – and also because it occurs during the traditional mourning of the Counting of the Omer. Yom HaShoah was created by a resolution passed by the Knesset (April 12, 1951). Our synagogue will send you annual reminders of upcoming Yahrzeit dates. One Yom Kippur, all the memorial plaques are lit, and we read the names of all of our loved ones. Often, members tell stories that help us get to know the person a little better. Here at CSOA, we also have the tradition of reading a short biography of each loved one we are remembering.
